Fashion & Style: Mikkel

Introduce yourself!
Hi! My name is Mikkel Weiss. I am 18 years old, live in Denmark and I’m the owner of www.mikkelweiss.com. I am using a lot of time on my blog every day because I have big dreams about its future. I also study international business next to my blogging, but I graduate this May, which I am looking forward to. Then of course I am also spending quality time with my family and friends.

Where do you get your inspiration for each look?
It is very difficult to describe what inspires you because you can’t really control it, but my every day subconscious inspiration has to be all the people on the street, my friends and fascinating places with a lot of life.
If I’m consciously looking for inspiration I will read other fashion blogs and use social media like Tumblr, Instagram and Lookbook.

What’s your ‘Go-To’ outfit for when you need to get ready in a hurry?
If I am really in a hurry and have to be somewhere, I will usually wear some black skinny jeans with a t-shirt that has some kind of pattern, print or special colors just to make the outfit a little interesting. Then I will finish it with some nice sneakers and a watch as the final touch.

What are the three favorite things in your closet?
My Henry Skeleton Watch from Marc by Marc Jacobs. It is just pure perfection.
My Dr. Martens shoes have always been my favorite shoes.
A comfy knit sweater I bought from Topman. Nothing beats a nice cozy knit sweater ;)

What are some of your favorite shops or websites for clothes, shoes and accessories?
Marc by Marc Jacobs, Levi’s, Topman, Asos, Kenzo, RiverIsland, Triwa and H&M

What fashion or styling tips would you give to someone who wants to improve their sense of style?
Don’t take it too seriously! Do what you want and wear what you think looks cool.

Fashion & Style: Anna

7:23:00 AM Jem Lawren 0 Comments

Introduce yourself!
Hi! My name is Anna from the Philippines. I currently work for an executive search firm in Manila. I am very interested in fashion and a bit of amateur photography.During spare time, I devote a time for my blog The A List (thealister.tumblr.com) which is mainly my outlet for personal style documentation.

How would you describe your sense of style?
It is quite hard to describe how I dress as it evolves over time. Let’s just say that it is edgy feminine. Oh, I also wear a lot of black and short skirts.

Where do you get your inspiration for each look?
I am heavily inspired by local and international blogs. A top of mind example is Jennifer Wang of Art in our Blood (artinourblood.blogspot.com) Instagram is also a quick source of ideas.

What’s your ‘Go-To’ outfit for when you need to get ready in a hurry?
An interesting dress! It is such a no-brainer outfit. Or my black jumpsuit and romper also. Hahaha. Basically any one-piece clothing is all good.

What are the three favorite things in your closet?
It is hard to pick just three but to narrow it down, I love my ankle strap heels, corset, and kimono the most.

What are some of your favorite shops or websites for clothes, shoes and accessories?
I find Zara, Mango and Topshopas stylish brands worth checking out. Also, thrift shops and bazaars are treasure chests for unique yet cheap pieces. You’ll just need a lot of patience but it is worth it!

What fashion or styling tips would you give to someone who wants to improve their sense of style?
My suggestions for anyone who needs a lift in their fashion sense  are to:
1.    Invest in well-fitting clothes.
2.    Buy quality basics/classic pieces (ex. little black dress, pumps, white shirt) first in building your wardrobe.
3.    If you cannot afford the luxury item (ex: bag, shoe) it is better to buy an inspired by/knock-off piece than the fake replica.
4.    Familiarize yourself with your body type so you know how to flaunt assets and hide flaws when dressing up.
5.    Read blogs/magazines for inspiration.
6.    Have fun! Do not be afraid to experiment.

Is there a blog/webpage or Youtube channel where we can find you?
If you have time, please do visit my Tumblr: The A List (thealister.tumblr.com).

Exclusive interview withTYDE By DeDe bow tie designer Deroll Scarlett

7:25:00 AM Jem Lawren 0 Comments

Last month I had the honor of attending the launching of a fabulous bow tie line called TYED By DEDE. Deroll Scarlett, the mastermind behind TYED By DEDE is a new up and coming bow tie accessory designer who is based in New York.
I had the opportunity to sit and chat with Deroll to get more insight as to what inspired him and how he found the courage to launch his own bow tie line. Here’s what Deroll had to say:

Why did you decide to become a fashion accessory designer?
It only took me 30 years, but I finally figured out what I wanted to be when I grow up. And this is it - owning my own men’s neck wear business and bringing a splash of color blocking into wardrobes all over the world. I've been wearing bow-ties for years now and the majority of my collections are homemade ties. I started making my own bow-ties for multiple reasons:
•          Bow-ties are hard to find in stores
•          Bow-ties in stores are expensive
•          I don't have enough hobbies (yeah, right...)

What does fashion means to you as a developing fashion designer?
Fashion is an art whereby I am able to express myself.

What were and what are your inspirations for your creations?
When you come to Brooklyn, you find a diverse sense of style in each community. As a native brooklynite, growing up in this borough was not the easiest. While having a rough childhood with a single parent, she always taught me to go after my dreams and never give up.  Brooklyn has helped me express my individuality through fashion as my art.

How would you describe your inspiration behind the TYED brand ?
TYED BY DeDe started out as an idea turned into reality. What started out as a simple piece of fabric, grew into a collection.

What sets your bow tie line apart from others?
Our custom made bow tie sets our customer apart to be an edgy individual. We pay careful attention in selecting only the best quality fabric. A TYDE By DeDe customer won’t have to worry about attending any event and having 20 people in the same tie: don’t you hate that? Lol. You pick the fabric and we'll do the rest. No more expensive bow ties and clip on's.

Bow ties are usually worn during formal events or special occasion. Do you think bow ties have become more acceptable as an everyday accessory to ones attire?
Yes, bow ties have become more acceptable as an everyday accessory, the stigma of a “stuff look “ no longer applies to one who wears a bow tie. Fashion has changed a lot, celebrities and other media elites are now seen in a bowtie and jeans pants or even shorts.

How do you select the materials for each piece?
Materials are usually selected by our team.  We discuss what our vision is for the next collection.

Can you please tell us about your design process?
Our design process is a collaborative one, in that, the team at TYDE BY DEDE look at current trends, our customers needs/requests. We always try going out on a limb and designing something unusual but wearable.

Do you pay attention to what is trending in the fashion world? For instance… like trending colors?
Absolutely, you have to pay attention to trends or you will be left behind. Paying attention to trends also help you to create your own trend.

Once you have the product, how do you get the word out?
We get the word of our product out by extensive promotion, Facebook, twitter, Instagram. We also contact our previous customers directly (by email).

What store would you love to have your bow tie accessory line in?
Do I have to pick just one? Lol.  Barneys New York.

What blogs or magazines do you read?
I read too many magazines, Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, InStyle, Essence, O etc. I read quite a few blogs.

So far, what is the most memorable moment an accessory designer?
Seeing my design.

What are your plans for the future?
Plans for the future is to take over the world…LOL…One bow tie at a time!

What are essentials that every man should have in his closet?
A nice crisp white button down shirt: You can dress it up or down. Pair it with a cardigan or motorcycle jacket or sports coat and you’re ready for any occasion. Dinner with the pals, a night out on the town or even a casual business meeting.

7 Great Body Lotions for Summer

5:28:00 AM Jem Lawren 0 Comments

Now that winter is over and spring has finally decided to show its face. As the season changes so should your skincare. So some of you at the moment, may be in the process of ditching those heavy creams and butters for a more summer friendly smooth and lightweight option.  Products that have ingredients such as aloe and jojoba are perfect for those summer months.

When it comes to body lotions, you want to choose those that are a milky have a gel consistency which are non-greasy and can be absorbed faster in the skin.
During those hot months staying cool and dry is key.  I have chosen 7 great lotions I feel would be perfect for the summer months.

Remember, before choosing any type of skincare product you should always consider your skin type, ingredients and fragrance. Oh yeah…and most importantly…don’t forget to use sun screen!

Fashion & Style: Craig

11:00:00 AM Jem Lawren 0 Comments

Introduce yourself!
My name is Craig and I’m a native of Worcester . I currently work as a store designer and rendering specialist at a large box retailer. I also work part-time in electronic sales. I’ve somehow earned the nickname at work as, “the guy who never wears the same shoes twice.” I usually get bored with things quickly so I’m always looking for something new in whatever I do for the most part. “Variety is the spice of life.”

How would you describe your sense of style?
Classy urban…. (did I just make that up???)  I like the classic and sophisticated look, but with a little bit of flavor to it.

Where do you get your inspiration for each look?
I get inspiration from everywhere. If a certain pattern catches my eye, I look for it. If I see an unusual color combination somewhere, I will try to work it into an outfit. By going out of my comfort zone, I’ve realized that there are many different looks that I have grown to like that I probably wouldn’t have tried before.

Whats your Go-To outfit for when you need to get ready in a hurry?
My go to outfit is probably a v-neck sweater or t-shirt with colored jeans/ pants and a pair of casual sneakers. It seems to always work in a rush and is easy to modify if the occasion calls for it.

What are the three favorite things in your closet?
For the warm weather I like my t-shirts, watches, and sunglasses. During the other       seasons I like my ties, shoes, and blazers.

What are some of your favorite shops or websites for clothes, shoes and accessories?
I’m always in Macy’s or TJMaxx, but I also find great things in Nordstroms. As for online, I usually shop at Shopstyle.com. It’s a great site that shows items from a number of online retailers in one spot.

What fashion or styling tips would you give to someone who wants to improve their sense of style?
I would suggest trying different things. The key is to balance between that and being yourself. Step out of your comfort zone a little bit. Who knows…. You may like what you see!
