Fashion & Style: Nicola
Introduce
yourself!
I’m Nicola. I am originally
from Germany, but have been living in Tokyo, Japan, for the last few years. I
graduated from university with a degree in Art last year and am currently
working in the commercial industry while freelancing as a Designer. On the
side, I love to blog about fashion and my personal style.
How would you
describe your sense of style?
A little bit of hippie, bohemian, mode and
classic - and sometimes something entirely different!
Where do you
get your inspiration for each look?
Mostly by living in the city. Tokyo inspires
me in many ways, and what inspires me the most, is the fashion. The people
living here are so playful with what they put on and an endless range of local
brands offers so much style diversity. Tokyo is an everlasting source of
over-inspiration!
Are there any
celebrities/fashion icons whose style you admire?
No one in particular, but I like to pick up
the latest magazines or quickly flip through them at the newsstand and check
out the styles.
What’s your
‘Go-To’ outfit for when you need to get ready in a hurry?
I have this wonderful oversized, black knit
from 7 for all mankind and I will just throw that on and any skirt or pair of
trousers I find at the top of my pile and go with that. Usually I will brush it
up with a statement necklace and earrings, if it’s a bad-hair-kind-of-day I’ll
add a hat and I’m ready to leave the house!
What are the three
favorite things in your closet?
- Balenciaga Heels
- Rebecca Minkoff flower pattern Biker Jacket
- Tiffany&Co Knot Earrings
All three are my favorites in different categories, favorite pair of shoes, favorite piece of clothing (more of a Spring piece though), and favorite jewelry

If you had the
option of replacing all items in your closet with items from a particular
designer. Who would that be?
Alexander Wang! His own collections as well as
his collections for Balenciaga!
What are some of your
favorite shops or websites for clothes, shoes and accessories?
I like going to Opening Ceremony and check out
what’s new, as well as checking out Japanese local brands goa (http://goa-net.com/goa_ladys/) and MURUA (http://murua.co.jp/), or
when I am back in my hometown Hamburg in Germany, I never leave town before checking
out Petra Teufel (http://petrateufel.de/)!
What fashion
or styling tips would you give to someone who wants to improve their sense
of style?
For starters, I would recommend looking
though magazines that feature a style you like and recreating outfits from it with
the clothes you have at home to gain a feeling for the kind of balance you like
in an outfit. When you come to a point where you feel comfortable with how an
outfit looks on you, try adding your own little twists to it and gradually grow
into your own style!
